Battle Out of Hell’s second level is one of the most enjoyable I’ve played in Painkiller. Entitled Loony Park, it’s set in a decrepit amusement park. The park may be run-down and demon-infested but there’s still fun to be had.
There are demonic puppets that hang by their strings after you kill them, evil clowns and some … aberrations that throw … something or other at you. All of which need to boom’d and bang’d and generally blown to smithereens. The action was very satisfying.
The level finale is a roller-coaster ride. Literally, a roller-coaster ride and a literal rail-shooter to boot. It was tremendous fun and I had an ear-to-ear grin as I attempted to blast away at demons while moving up, down and upsidedown.
All told it was a tremendous level. (There are gameplay videos from the level here.)
My only criticism is that it’s perhaps a little short. I completed it in 16 minutes in a single runthrough and I wasn’t even trying a speedrun.
